You have to insert the following lines in the configuration file.

For Windows 98 O/s
Edit config.sys and add theselines

device=C:\windows\himem.sys
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe ram 72000
dos=umb,high
files=140
buffers=20

After these alterations you have to restart the system to take effect of the changes.

For Windows XP (all NT based O/S)

Edit config.nt file and alter the line at the end of the file. You can locate this file with the run command. and open with notepad.
files=140
(save it. And no need to restart the system)
